Kirk was born to a building family. His Grandfather began a small residential building company in the 1920’s in Detroit, Michigan as Stanley R. Johnston, Builder by Practical Experience. His Dad followed in his fathers foot steps and took up the business in the late 1940’s as S.R. Johnston & Son Builders and later as S.R. Johnston Company after his father’s retirement. Kirk along with his brother and sister also followed the family tradition and joined the family building business in the early 1980’s.
Prior to founding Northwoods Builders in 2000, Kirk acquired years of building knowledge and experience within the residential and commercial construction industry. He is a Walsh College alumnus, having graduated with a bachelor of business administration.
“I was attracted to and fascinated with the building industry at a very early age, I remember my Dad letting me ride on a bulldozer when I was very young at a jobsite and I have been hooked on building ever since, never seriously considering any other career. I learned from my family at a young age that values and principles such as quality, integrity and pride in ones work were the cornerstone of success in our business affairs and in life. I have carried these core principals with me in all my endeavors and they are the foundation of Northwoods Builders. We strive to make the custom home-building experience an exciting and enjoyable one and customer satisfaction with the complete building process is our primary goal, you have my word on it”.
In his free time, Kirk enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter. One of the family pastimes is equestrian activities at their home/ranch along with the family pet’s Badger, Charango, Poncho, Hart, Calico, Blueberry and Sir Roland. “We enjoy our northern Michigan lifestyle and spend as much time as allows in outdoor activities during the four seasons”.
